An IPO is the process where the shares of a privately owned company are offered for sale to the public and are listed on a stock exchange. Companies use the process of “going public” either as a means of raising additional funds to grow a business, or to generate cash for current shareholders who may be reducing their holdings in the particular stock (a liquidity event).
